Challenges at NPH Peru - Anabel Needs Your Help

Young Anabel was admitted to a local Peru public hospital for an infection in her left thigh. Her diagnosis has now developed into a chronic problem, she will continue to need medical attention, including eventually a bone graft. Financial support is needed to help her.

When I arrived at NPH Peru in early September, a seven-year-old girl, Anabel, who had arrived to NPH only a few weeks earlier was being admitted that same day to the local public hospital for an infection in her left thigh. When she arrived at NPH, she presented a good-sized

wound in her leg, with signs of infection. Anabel was brought to the

hospital where she was prescribed oral antibiotics, and sent home.

After a couple weeks of taking her medications, no signs of improvement were being seen. This is when she returned to the hospital and was admitted to receive intravenous antibiotics.

Anabel’s stay in the hospital lasted about a week, and her infection appeared to be getting better. She was discharged on oral antibiotics to continue fighting the infection.

However due to complications, the infection eventually spread and she developed osteomyelitis, an infection of the bone. After weeks of being bounced back and forth between different hospitals and doctors, it was decided it was necessary to bring Anabel to a private hospital in Lima, where she was then diagnosed with chronic osteomyelitis.

Once admitted to the private hospital, Anabel was immediately scheduled for the OR the following day to surgically remove the infection that had developed, which included taking out part of her femur. She remained in the private hospital for ten days while she recovered from the surgery, and to continue receiving antibiotic therapy intravenously.

The need to admit Anabel to a private hospital where she would receive adequate treatment has placed a fair amount of economic stress on NPH Peru. As her diagnosis has now developed into a chronic problem, she will continue to need medical attention, including eventually a bone graft. If you are interested in helping to financially support the ongoing needs of Anabel, or other such medical needs in any of our homes, please see the Projects section on the www.nph.org website.
